Dividend Compounders framework, explained

IN THE TRADITION OF PUBLISHED DIVIDEND-GROWTH STREAK RESEARCH

Dividend Compounders looks for companies with multi-year records of raising their dividend, tiered by the length of the streak and held to a combined standard of yield plus dividend growth. The streak is only the entry ticket. The case rests on coverage: whether earnings, free cash flow and the balance sheet currently support the payout.

What it looks for

STAGE 1 LOOKS FOR

Dividend growth streak, payout coverage from earnings and free cash flow, leverage ceilings, and the yield-plus-growth sum.

STAGE 2 READS FOR

Whether the payout survives the balance sheet and the business — coverage durability, debt maturities, and management commitment in the filings.

The quantitative screen looks for a dividend growth streak, payout coverage from both earnings and free cash flow, leverage within limits, and a combined yield-plus-growth figure.

The AI read asks whether the payout survives the balance sheet and the business: how durable the dividend is, the quality of its growth, balance-sheet strength including upcoming debt maturities, the yield, how durable the underlying business is, and what management has committed to in the filings.

Filings it reads

Every claim in a verdict cites one of these, by form, section and date. Anything they do not disclose is marked unknown rather than inferred.

What is readWhy this framework reads it
10-K: Business (Item 1) What the company sells, to whom, and how it competes.
10-K: Risk factors (Item 1A) The risks the company itself says are material.
10-K: MD&A (Item 7) Management’s explanation of what drove the results.
10-K: Financial statements and notes (Item 8) The audited numbers the rest of the read is checked against.
10-K notes: debt Maturities and covenants that could compete with the dividend for cash.
Proxy statement: executive pay Whether incentives favor the payout or other uses of cash.
Recent 8-Ks: results (Item 2.02) and other events (Item 8.01) Dividend declarations and recent results.
Annual report to shareholders, where it carries the 10-K items Some companies put MD&A and the financials there instead.

What each verdict means

A verdict describes how well a company’s filings fit this framework, as of the filings read. It is never a prediction and never an action to take.

GEMSTONE
The filings show a dividend covered by earnings and free cash flow, a balance sheet that can carry it, and a durable business behind it.
GEODE
The streak and some coverage tests hold, but debt, cash flow or the business outlook is mixed or unverifiable.
SEDIMENT
The filings show the payout outrunning its coverage, or a balance sheet that cannot sustain it.

When the filings cannot support any verdict, none is issued: the company is shown as Not scored.

What this framework misses

  • A streak records past decisions. Boards can cut a dividend at any time, and the read covers the filings to date.
  • Dividend history comes from reported data, which can be affected by splits and special dividends. Where the record is unclear, it is marked unknown.
  • Yield depends on the share price, which moves daily. The read uses the prior day’s close.
